2018 has been a terrible year for California. The state has suffered 56 wild fires since February, with five still burning. The Camp fire has been called the deadliest in history, with a death toll at 42, and over 7,000 structures destroyed – mostly homes.
South of the Camp fire, the Woolsey wildfire has already consumed 91,572 acres in California, destroying over 300 structures as it spread. As firefighters from around the country join the fight against the Woolsey wildfire in California, others are doing what they can to help the people feeling the effects of the blaze. The fire is a direct threat to many homes in Malibu, and several, including those belonging to Gerard Butler, Miley Cyrus and Neil Young have already been destroyed. But even though these people face losing their homes and belongings, they’re still urging other people to remember the pets who may be in danger in the area.
Among those who have stepped up to lend a hand to the animals is actress Sandra Bullock, who made a donation of $100,000 to the Humane Society of Ventura County to help them handle the sudden influx of displaced pets. Lisa Vanderpump, Real Housewife and vocal dog lover is collecting supplies for both humans and pets at the Vanderpump Dog Rescue Center in Los Angeles. Hollywood stuntman, Ardeshir Radpour and a friend managed to save a dozen horses on their own by responding to social media pleas.
Several celebrities including Zac Efron and Kevin Smith have taken to Twitter and other social media platforms to use their reach to find help for others. Actor James Woods has been tweeting almost non-stop, including providing tips for those who have horses, where to find shelter for displaced pets, where to donate supplies, and attempting to connect both humans and pets with their loved ones. He even helped actress Alyssa Milano get the word out that her horses still needed transport after a dangerous rumor spread that they were already safe.

Despite losing her home, singer Miley Cyrus expressed her gratitude that her pets and fiancée made it out safely, and shared links where donations could be made to organizations that are helping others. When State Farm agents heard that people were being turned away from shelters because they brought dogs with them and no kennels, they obtained 100 kennels so that the dogs could stay out of shelters and by their humans’ sides. Incredible.
When dogs were not allowed in2 @PierceCollegeCA shelter bc owners didn’t have kennels 4 them what did @StateFarm agents do? Obtain almost 100 of them so pets could spend the cold night with owners, indoors. Thx Long Nguyen, Stan Tolesnikov, Allen Sarafyanet & teams! #WoolseyFire pic.twitter.com/L3RLsDytKe

Of course, you don’t have to be a firefighter, celebrity, stuntman or insurance agent to help. While the firefighters are working tirelessly to protect and save as many homes and lives as they possibly can, several everyday people are donating supplies and funds to people who may have lost everything.
If you can adopt a pet, the Annenburg PetSpace is waiving adoption fees as it partners with L.A. shelters to make room for more pets as they are displaced. You can also offer to foster if you’re in a safe place nearby.
You can also help iHeartDogs donate to GreaterGood.org, which provides disaster relief for pets in emergency situations. You can read how they contributed in areas affected hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria to get an idea of how they help.
To help Californians with two legs, consider donating to the California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Relief Fund (CharityNavigator.org score 91.24/100) which helps rebuild homes and provide assistance for those affected by the fire.
