You don’t have to be a dog lover to enjoy William Wegman’s work, but it helps!
MTA Arts & Design makes New York City’s public transit a little brighter for commuters by installing visual and performing art in the public spaces. One of their latest installations is a commission from artist William Wegman, who is best known for his work with his Weimaraners!
“Stationary Figures” consists of 11 glass mosaic panels displayed on the walls of the 23rd Street station. Photographs taken by Wegman featured his Weimaraners Flo and Topper dressed as everyday NYC commuters.
The project was then handed over to artists at The Mayer Of Munich mosaic workshop, who pieced together the mosaics from Wegman’s images.
Wegman told MyModernMet.com:
“I wanted to create portraits of individual characters, people who you might see next to you on the platform. For these I dressed the dogs in more or less ordinary clothes, nothing too fashionable.”
Wegman’s love for Weimaraners began nearly 50 years ago, when he added his first, a dog named Man Ray, to his family. His admiration for his dog immediately became apparent in his work. Man Ray appeared in countless videos and photographs, and was named the Village Voice’s Man of The Year when he passed away in 1982.
Since then, Wegman has raised many other Weimaraners who have influenced and appeared in his work.
If you grew up watching Sesame Street, Wegman’s work may give you a feeling of nostalgia. He created clips featuring his dogs behaving like people, waiting tables and baking bread for the show.
