Houston Astros Pitcher Pays For Stray Dog’s Surgery And Gives Her A Home

Abby was running late for work the day she spotted a black lab laying near the road. She stopped to check on the dog, and immediately realized that the pup couldn’t walk, and had likely been hit by a car. She was panting, crying, and clearly in an extreme amount of pain.

Abby dropped everything to take the dog, now named Holly (for the bush near where she was found,) to the vet. They discovered that the dog was about two years old, and had a broken leg, punctured lung, and a fractured elbow. The vet offered to euthanize the dog, as the cost to keep Holly alive was over $10,000 – but Abby was determined to make it happen.

“There was no doubt in my mind that I was gonna raise the money.”

She tells Fox 26 Houston that she made Holly a promise,

“I told her, ‘If you make it through this, you will never suffer again and you will have the best life.’”

Abby started a GoFundMe fundraiser to pay for Holly’s care that day, and most of the funds were raised, but they still came up a bit short. But last week, Abby announced that an anonymous friend had not only donated the remaining amount the needed for the surgery, but offered to adopt Holly as well! The name of the generous friend remained a mystery until just recently when Abby made it public that Astros pitcher Dallas Keuchel is adopting Holly!

Keuchel has a canine friend for Holly at his home, a French Bulldog named Beast. The Astros pitcher helped his team win the World Series last season and make the playoffs this season, but still has time to help a dog in need!

He’s not the only notable dog-lover on the team. Pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. started the Lance McCullers Foundation which helps shelter animals by raising awareness about homeless dogs and aims to make every shelter in the city of Houston no-kill. Pitcher Justin Verlander and model Kate Upton host an annual Grand Slam Adoption Event that raises funds to have shelter dogs trained as service animals for veterans. So even if you’re not a baseball fan, there’s still several good reasons to be an Astros fan!

Holly hasn’t gone home yet and is still being cared for by Abby until she’s ready later this month. Holly’s casts will come off soon and her veterinarian expects her to make a full recovery.
